She was born August 3, 1899 in Fairview, Idaho. She was the oldest of six children born to Richard James Smith and Sarah Matilda Adams Smith. She married Newel Winget in the Logan LDS Temple, May 27, 1926. He preceded her in death on August 16, 1969. Veta was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She fulfilled a mission to Chihuahua, Mexico from 1922 to 1924. As a member of the Ninth Ward in Logan, Utah she served in many church callings, including stake Primary president, ward and stake Relief Society councilor, ward young women councilor, and Sunday School teacher. She and Newel served as missionaries in Nauvoo, Illinois, from 1965 to 1967. In 1990 Veta moved from Logan, where she had resided for 50 years, to Highland Cove Retirement Center in Salt Lake City. While there, she remained active in her LDS branch as a visiting teacher and councilor in the Relief Society.
Veta and Newel owned and operated Winget's Ice Cream and Candy Store in Logan for 30 years. In addition to working in the store, Veta was active in the Soroptimist Club and the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. After retiring from the business, she continued to enjoy making chocolates for family and friends.
Veta had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud of their accomplishments and interested in their lives. They will miss her example, her enthusiasm for life, and her love.
She is survived by her son, R. N. (Donna), Logan; daughters, Pauline Christiansen (Dale), Shirrell Hughes, Patricia Jones (Kenneth), Salt Lake City, UT; one sister, Monta Nelson; one brother, Arlow Smith; and 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Friday, January 2, 1998 in the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center Street, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment Logan City Cemetery.
