Mo was born to Walter and Carrie Hughes Merritt. He grew up on a farm and was a World War 2 veteran in the Navy. He served state side and was a guard on troop trains. While in the Navy he even wrestled. He was discharged on March 4th 1946, after 4 years of service.
Mo earned the American Campaign Medal, World War Two Victory Medal and the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was a Petty Officer First Class.
He was married to Mary Charlotta Haight on Nov.12,1947 and returned to farming. Around the 1960's he was elected as Mayor of Burlington. When Mo turned 95 he was considered the oldest surviving Mayor of Burlington. He was also on the city council,a volunteer fireman,and farmer.
