Augustus was the son of Jacob and Rebecca "Myers" Mordecai. Born in North Carolina, Augustus Mordecai removed in early life to Virginia, the home of his ancestors, and was there engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death. He was a prominent planter, and a man of influence, serving for a number of years as presiding Justice of the Board of Magistrates of Henrico County, VA. On March 3, 1835 in Rhode Island, he married Rosina Ursula Young, who was born in Virginia, which was also the birthplace of her father, William Young, and they resided on the home plantation, "Rosewood". He and Rosina became the parents of three sons and four daughters. All three of his sons, William Young, John Brooke and George Washington, served in the CSA in the 2nd Richmond Howitzers. Augustus died at "Rosewood", near Richmond, VA, after an illness of about 10 days at the age of 41. He was a good and dutiful son, a kind brother, and a fond and solicitous husband and father.
