Argentine politician and stateman, Constitutional President of Argentina (1983 - 1989) in its return to democracy, following the military government of the Proceso de Reorganización Nacional (National Reorganization Process). He attended the Liceo Militar General San Martín where he graduated as second lieutenant and joined the Radical Civic Union (UCR) in 1945. He studied at the Universidad de La Plata's Law School where he got his degree in 1950. As a congressman he was a member of the House of Deputies (the congress' lower chamber) and the Senate. In 1975 he helped establish the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights, and as a president he created the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP) to document the human rights abuses during the preceeding military dictatorship. He sponsored the Trial of the Juntas, by which some of the top members of the previous military regime were prosecuted for crimes committed during the "Dirty War". It is said the his government brought some political order to the country but lacked economical success. In 1989 he was succeeded by Carlos S. Menem, also elected in democracy. He died in his home after a long battle with lung cancer. (bio by: Nes Pagani)
