Elizabeth (Betsy) Barley, 50, of 414 W. 20th St., New York City, NY., died Feb. 7, 1989 at a Grand Rapids hospital. Miss Barley was born on Sept. 27, 1938, in Detroit, the daughter of A.C. and Elizabeth (Gregg) Barley.
After graduating from the University of Michigan in 1960, she was employed by the Journal of American Medical Association as part of its first staff. She worked for Medical World News in New York City, and co-authored a book, "Young Runner's Handbook." She became a freelance medical writer, and had a column on health and travel for Travel and Leisure Magazine. She was also one of the editors of Newsweek Magazine, and was on the news staff at Albert Einstein College in New York City. She published a column for Good Housekeeping magazine, and wrote articles for the Physicians' Weekly. Her last assignment was as public relations director for the Asian Film Festival at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. She was a long-time member of the National Association of Science Writers.
She is survived by one brother, Lawrence; three sisters, Mary Martin of Lansing, and Joan Barley and Gail Nowak of Grand Rapids.
