SUDDEN DEATH
of J. N. Gracy, one of the Oldest Settlers of Lampasas.

Saturday, while attempting to lift a sack of corn, Mr. J. N. Gracy broke his truss and re-ruptured himself. Dr. Adkins was called and with Dr. Largen in consultation the patient seemed to do well when he suddenly died Sunday morning. Dr. Largen's opinion is that there must have been a rupture of one of the organs as the hernia was reduced. The funeral occured Monday morning, the service was conducted by the Rev. J. M. Putnam, of the First M. E. Church South and the body was followed to it's last resting place by his many friends, the cortege being one of the largest ever seen in Lampasas. Mr. Gracy was an Englishman by birth and came to this place about '58. He was a lifelong prohibitionist and a firm republican, for several years he was the only one in Lampasas County who voted the republican ticket. He opened and up to a few years ago kept the only hotel, at the start occupying a log house, but in later years he built a fine stone hotel and ran it up to the day of his death. "Gracy's Bell" was known far and wide, it never failed, storm or sunshine, winter or summer, to ring exactly on time.
Mr. Gracy leaves the partner of all his joys, all his sorrows, his trials, his struggles and tribulations to tread her short path alone.
Lampasas loses a good citizen in Mr. Gracy, hard working, quiet and law abiding, never letting his right hand know what his left hand was doing. There are a great many people all over the land who will keep a warm place in their hearts for him. Many there are who he has taken in sick and hungry, clothed and fed them and made them well, never asking for pay, doing these things when he knew there was no chance for remuneration and yet it never kept him from the good work.

Not sure who entered his family information and very funny that obit says he was born in England. His brother married my husband's ggrdmother and I have searched Gracy family. Gracy descendant sent thru email that he was born in Tenn. and parents are John B. Gracy 1788-1858 and Mary Ann Shores 1796-1884. Father born in Georgia moved to Tenn. and later Missouri. John Newton Gracy married Harriet Newland Beanland Sept. 11, 1842 in Morgan Co. MO (marriage bk 1-2, page 72). He was mentioned in his father's Last Will and Testament. John B. Gracy and wife Mary are buried Hopewell Union Cemetery, Morgan Co. MO. Hoping you can include in his bio or know who could. Sincerely, Carol
