Birth: 1819
County Westmeath, Ireland
Death: Jan. 28, 1899
Fairfield County
Connecticut, USA

My paternal great great grandparents, Michael & Mary Gilligan O'Hara, came over from Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland about 1847. Michael and his pregnant wife boarded the ship with their three daughters: Betsey [sic], Mary and Emily. Unfortunately tragedy struck this family while on the ocean. Their little girl, Emily, died, and was "buried at sea."

That is the oral history of the family passed on by Emily's sister, Betsey (or Elizabeth). Betsey considered this part of the trip so important that in 1941 her son, John Henry Enright, passed that on to his daughter-in-law, my mother Anne/Nan R. Mackie Enright [Gustin].

Another event occurred onboard, Mary Gilligan O'Hara gave birth to her son, John. In the 1880 U.S. Census of Bridgeport, Connecticut, 33 year old John O'Hara clears up the confusion of the previous three censuses which have him being born in New York, in England, in Ireland. John told the census taker that warm June day of 1880 the real facts about his birth, his birthplace was the "Atlantic Ocean." So this is a huge hint as to when his parents emigrated. It had to have been in 1847!

Michael O'Hara is listed in the 1850-1870 censuses as either a laborer or a day laborer. In the first ten years of his new life in the United States, Michael had learned to read and write. By the end of twenty years here his real estate had grown from $400 to $2,000. He also had three grown children out and married by 1870. His children went to school and then appeared to work in the many Bridgeport factories shirtmaker, dressmaker, toolmaker, machinist, cartridge maker.
