Professional Football Player, Coach. During his more than thirty years as a player and coach in football, he encompassed the college ranks, and three professional leagues. Born Louis Henry Saban, he attended Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Illinois. During his collegiate years at Indiana University, he was a standout player at the quarterback position and was named team MVP in 1942. He played at the linebacker and fullback positions for four seasons (1946 to 1949) in the All-America Football Conference with the Cleveland Browns. He was a member of four AAFC Champion teams (1946 to 1949) and appeared in 54 career regular season AAFC games. After retiring as a player, he had several coaching stints at the collegiate level with such schools as Northwestern University, Western Illinois University, the University of Maryland, the University of Miami, Army and the University of Central Florida. In 1960 he returned to the professional level, when he was named the first head coach of the Boston Patriots in the newly formed American Football League. He remained there for parts of two seasons (1960 to 1961) before replacing Buster Ramsey as head coach with the Buffalo Bills. During his time there from 1962 to 1965, he guided them to two consecutive AFL championship titles (1964 and 1965) and was named AFL Coach of the Year for both those seasons. His other professional coaching jobs include the Denver Broncos (who joined the National Football League after the merger in 1970) from 1967 to 1971, and a return to the Bills from 1972 to 1976. In addition, he served as general manager of the Broncos. He was inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. (bio by: C.S.)
