Virgil was born Sept. 2, 1924, to Josea and Helen Tate in Chestnut Ridge, Mo. Virgil resided there until 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Virgil served in the Engineer Corp, in Germany until 1944.
He returned to St. Louis, Mo., where he met his spouse of 54 years, Ethel Elizabeth Willis of Farmer, Mo.
He loved to fish and hunt with family and friends and to spend time in his garden. He will always be remembered for his natural ability to make people laugh.
Many family and friends enjoyed his country hospitality and cooking. He was always a good provider and the center of his family's lives. He would give a helping hand to any stranger.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Elizabeth Willis; sister, Mary; son, Leon (Kathleen) Tate; daughter, Susan Tate; his youngest son, David (Debra) Tate; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Virgil was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers, "Dude" and Emil; an infant grandson, Bradley Willis Tate; and grandson, Aaron, the apple of his eye.
