Gen Eben Swift

United States Army General. He was the son of Captain Ebenezer Swift, a United States Army Surgeon and Sarah Edwards Capers Swift. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West point in 1876 and married Susan Bonaparte Palmer, the daughter of General Innis N. Palmer, in 1880. They had five children, including Innis Palmer Swift, who also became a general. He first served in the Indian Wars on the great plains and then in the Spanish American War. As part of the military government in Puerto Rico, he did relief work during the hurricane of San Ciriaco. He served in the Philippines and then in the punitive expedition in Mexico, actions in which his son Innis also participated. During World War I, he commanded the 82nd division and was a Major General, commander of United States forces in Italy when he reached mandatory retirement age on May 11, 1918. He was a director of the Army War College and wrote many books and papers on military topics, including The Wilderness Campaign which he co-authored with Edward Porter Alexander and William Roscoe Livermore. Camp Swift, a major training facility in Texas during World War II was named in his honor. (bio by: KenOhio)

Rest in peace, General. Thank you for your long years of service to our nation. My mother's maiden name was Swift; I wonder if we're related somewhere back in time.
