Alice Irene Baxter was born August 29, 1913 in Buffalo Prairie, Illinois the daughter of William and Viola Murdock McKay. She was united in marriage to Elmer Harris and to this union two children were born, Charlotte Joan and James Lee. Irene worked as a homemaker in her own home as well as cashier for three generations of Thomas', Ed, Russell and Jack, at the Thomas Grocery store in What Cheer. Later she would marry Tom Baxter, the two of them own and operated the Tastee Freeze in Sigourney. Irene was also a member of the Christian Church in What Cheer.

Irene is survived by her son and his wife, Jim and Beverly Harris of Oskaloosa; two sisters, Alberta Lewis of What Cheer and Harriett Caswell of Newton; three grandchildren: Jeff (Mary) Harris, Kirk Harris, LeAnne Harris; five great grandchildren: Benjamin, Jo Anne, Jilianne and Jackson Harris and Cody Moran; one great great grand daughter, Jacey Anne Harris.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Joan; husbands Elmer Harris and Tom Baxter; five brothers: Maynard, Gene, William, Earl and Ralph; three sisters: Mildred (Toots), Kathleen and Virginia.
