About 1876 W.D. opened a mercantile business,W.D. Elliott & Co. in Covington. It was located on the left side of the square. He was joined by his cousins, Walter and Jackson Lattimore of N.C. and by brother in law Robert Tyre Jones.
When the store opened, they moved to Covington renting half of a house from widow of Dr. W. D. Conyers,one of Covington's pioneers.
In 1879 the store was destroyed by fire. Lack of insurance caused them to go back to the Jones homestead.
After moving to TX.,They were to return to Newton Co.,after the news of Sarah's father,William Green Jones. He was murdered in the woods of his farm and robbed of 2500.00 after selling his cotton crop. (before banks)

He and Jackson Elliott later became partners in Porterdale Mercantile. In 1889, Sarah inherited 150 acres on her Father's estate in Western Newton Co.,Ga. The boys walked 2 miles to school at Salem Campground.

In 1893 the boys attended a new consolidated school named Livingston School.
