Augustus Daniel Hinkle, known as A.D., was born March 9, 1873, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to George and Francis (Hungerpiller) Hinkle. His siblings were William (1870), John (1871) and Anna (1876). He also had half siblings from his father's 2nd marriage to Mary Antley; Ethel (1888), Fannie (1892), Lilla (1895), Harry (1898).

Also known as Gus, AD married Mariah (nee Bozard) Bozard, widow of Henry C Bozard, sometime around 1895. Mariah had 6 known children from her first marriage. AD & Mariah had three known children; AD Hinkle Jr, b 15 Nov 1898, d 28 Dec 1898; Pansey L b 12 Feb 1900, d 12 Jun 1901; Infant son b&d Oct 1902. It is not known if or when they were divorced. Mariah died at age 61 on 21 Dec 1926.

He met Ida Gix in Florida during one of her annual trips to Florida with her family. They were married on May 9, 1923, in Detroit, (Wayne County) Michigan. They made their home in Petoskey, (Emmet County) Michigan, at the family residence at 209 Howard Street. They operated a laundry and dry cleaning business there and lived in the residence on the 2nd floor at 207 Howard St.

A.D. died on January 27, 1951, at 118 Mary Day St, in Pontiac, MI. The death certificate states he had "pneumonia, broncho" the last month of his life. He had been diagnosed as having "senility with psychosis" for about a year before his death. A.D. also suffered from "generalized arteriosclerosis" for about 10 years. He is buried next to his wife, Ida, at Greenwood Cemetery, Block 55 Lot 12, in Petoskey, Michigan. He was 77 years old.
