Catherine Rebecca Hilsabeck
One of the original family members from Germanton, Stokes County, North Carolina, Catherine Rebecca Hilsabeck made her move west with her father John Hilsabeck, mother Anna Catharine Fulk-Hilsabeck and her siblings to Owen County, Indiana. This move took place about 1835. Catherine would have been about eight years old.
Catherine Rebecca, better know as Katie, never married and lived with the family in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana, when the family moved from North Carolina. She is mentioned in her father's estate and after the affairs of the family were settled, in Owen County, she again moved with the various family members, including her mother, to Marshall County, Iowa. By 1859, her brother John Benjamin Hilsabeck made a move to Manning, Carroll County, Iowa and later to Manila, Crawford County, Iowa. Katie and John Benjamin Hilsabec were very close. About 1892 she moved to Holdrege, Nebraska along with her brother John Benjamin Hilsabeck where she lived until 1908. She was at the side of her brother when he died. After his death she moved to Blue Hill, Webster Co., Nebraska and spent her remaining 6 years living with and cared for by her grandniece Edna Hilsabeck-Lane and her husband John Boyd Lane. Katie died in 1914. (researcher, Joseph K. Hilsabeck)

Miss Hilsabeck Dies at Advanced Age

Miss Catherine Rebecca Hilsabeck passed away early last Friday morning at the home of her grandniece, Mrs. John Lane. Her death was due to old age, she being over 87 years old.
Miss Hilsabeck had retained her vigor to a remarkable degree and enjoyed her usual good health up to about four months ago when the weight of her advanced years began to be asserted and she commenced to fail. She had been very ill for several weeks, but through the care given her and the constant vigil of her grandniece, Mrs. Lane, she survived even longer than anticipated.
Brief services were held at the Lane home Saturday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. Hancock, and that evening Mr. and Mrs. Lane accompanied the remains to Holdrege where, on the following day, the burial occurred, the body being laid to rest beside that of her brother, who died about nine years ago.
Miss Hilsabeck was born at Rockford, North Carolina, January 28, 1827 and had therefore reached the age of 87 years, 9 months and 2 days. She accompanied her people to Iowa in an early day and lived there for many years. About 22 years ago she removed to Holdrege with her brother John Hilsabeck, with whom she made her home. Miss Hilsabeck practically raised Mrs. Lane and the devotion existing between the two ladies was more like that of mother and daughter. During the past five or six years she had made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Lane and they did everything possible for her comfort and happiness in he closing years of her life.
Miss Hilsabeck was a very interesting woman, and retained her mental faculties to the last. She was well informed and had a remarkable memory of things occurring many years ago. She could recall scores of incidents of historical interests that had occurred during her life. She was an aunt to D. W. Hilsabeck, the pioneer piano dealer of Holdrege.
Miss Hilsabeck had endeared herself to many friends during her residence in Blue Hill.
