ROODHOUSE - Lester O. Williams, 90, of Roodhouse passed away Sunday, March 22, 2009, at the White Hall Nursing and Rehab Center.
He was born June 27, 1918, the son of Silas and Frances O. Johnson Williams. He married Norma R. Clevenger on March 4, 1944, in Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Faye and Ed Williams; and three sisters, Ina Williams, Hazel Emerson and Goldie Collins.
Lester served in the U.S. Army for the Battery B Harbor Defense of Galveston Fort Crockett, Texas from 1942 to 1946. He was a staff sergeant for the Artillery Mechanic Maintenance Organization. While in the Army, he received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and American Theater Ribbon.
He was a farmer all of his life, raising cattle and crops. He loved being out in the country and working in his machine shed. He loved his Allis-Chalmers tractors. His family meant the most to him and he enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible. He and his son were the best of friends and completely inseparable. The last ten years of his life, his beloved canine companion, Sugar, kept him active and on his feet.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; daughter, Barbara J. Williams of Springfield; son, Danny (Dana) Williams of Roodhouse; five grandchildren, Rhonda (Mark) Krueger of Peru, Monica Owens of Springfield; Tiffany (Mike) Cabibbo of Longwood, FL, Brittany Williams of Edwardsville and Stephany Williams of Roodhouse; three great-grandchildren, Connor Owens of Springfield; Marcus Krueger of Peru and Michael Cabibbo of Longwood, FL; two brothers, Tom (Dorothy) Williams of Anawan and Ralph (Betty) Williams of Divernon; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his dearly beloved dog, Sugar.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Roselawn Memorial Park, with the Rev. Vaughn Beeman officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
