Kanawha Man Dies in Canoe Accident
A Kanawha County man drowned Sunday in the Gauley River near Swiss, Nicholas County, said a spokeswoman for the state police detachment in Summersville. Clinton Robert "Bubby" Hudnall, 36, of Hugheston was fishing from a canoe in the river when the vessel apparently struck a rock, causing him to fall into the into the river, the spokeswoman said. Hudnall and his wife were camping along the river. She was on the riverbank when she heard the collision and a splash. She ran for help when she saw that her husband was no longer in the canoe, the spokeswoman said. A Summersville trooper said another camper recovered the body from the river a short time later. He said the river was not swift at the point where Hudnall fell in and the water was below its normal level. Hudnall was a lifelong resident of Hughes Creek. He was a land surveyor for A&E Associates in Charleston. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and attended Hughes Creek Church of God.
