Cleo Fern Bettles, 92, of Council Grove, KS, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Salina Regional Medical Center.

She was born September 28, 1916 at Wichita, KS, the third of six children, to Archie Lorenzo and Eva Rosann (Olson) Bishop.

Her parents farmed at Andover, KS and when her father died, her mother had an auction and moved to Junction City, KS. The family then moved to Delavan, KS where her mother operated the Delavan Telephone Exchange.

Her marriage to Bryce Abram Bettles was September 22, 1937 at Castle Rock, CO. They moved to Washington State, where they worked picking apples. Returning to Colorado Springs, they worked at the Bradey Hospital. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Delavan, KS and started farming, and moved to the White City community. In 1947, they settled on a farm west of Council Grove, where she lived for 62 years.

Cleo and Bryce enjoyed playing cards at the homes of their friends and at the Union Dale School house. Cleo enjoyed gardening, quilting and crocheting. She did a lot of painting and wallpaper hanging.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Margaret Daniels, four brothers, Elza Bishop, Clyde Bishop, Ralph Bishop and Roy Bishop, and daughter-in-law, Loretta Bettles.

She is survived by two daughters, Darlene Loveland, of Maple Hill, KS, and Ruth Campbell, of Pittsburg, KS; three sons, John Bettles and wife Faynola, of Council Grove, KS, Roger Bettles and wife Kay, of Herington, KS and Loren Bettles, of Winfield, KS; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 19 great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, March 23, 2009, at Wilsey Christian Church, with Pastors Bob Strom and Harold Brown officiating. Interment will follow at the Wilsey cemetery. She will lie in state from 12:00 to 8:00 pm, Sunday, March 22nd at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel.
