Joseph Frye was born in Massachusetts and the eighth child born to John & Tabitha Farnham Frye (Frie). He married Mehitable Poor in 1732. They quickly had 3 children, but all perished in a diptheria (called throat distemper) epidemic in 1738. His next child also died early. Joseph & Mehitable then had 7 more children who lived to adulthood.
Although his father was a military man, early records record Joseph as being a farmer and surveyor. However during King George's War, he enlisted in the army and began his military career, serving in both that war and the French & Indian War. Around 1761/1762, he petitioned for and was awarded a land grant in the area near the Saco River, which later became Fryeburg.
He sided with the patriots during the Revolutionary War and was awarded the rank of Major General and later, Brigadier General of Massachusetts, however his failing health caused him to resign from service and retire to Fryeburg.
He died in Fryeburg at the age of 83.
