Nathaniel was the 4th of 7 children (2nd son) born of Stephen Pingrey (Pengre) (Pengree) (b. 1711/2) and his 2nd wife, Anna (Anne) Jewett (b. 1729). Nathaniel's siblings were: Mary (b. 1737), Aaron (b. 1741/2), Thomas (b. 1745), Jane (b. 1757), Stephen (b. 1759), Aquila (b. 1761), Jonathan (b. 1765), Joseph (b. 1767), and William (b. 1771).

At the age of 16 years, Nathaniel was detached from an Essex County, Massachusetts Militia Company for about 3 months service at and about Boston. He entered this service August 21, 1779 as a Private in Captain John Kettell's Company, Major Nathaniel Heath's Detachment of Guards. He was discharged from this service at the expiration of the detachment's enlistment, September 30, 1779. Major Heath's Detachment of Guards were raised for various purposes at and about Boston, including guarding troops of convention (British Prisoners), under successive engagements of 3 months.

In 1786, Nathaniel moved from Massachusetts to the part of Ludlow which become incorporated within the Town of Mount Holly, Rutland County, Vermont, October 31, 1792.
