Alvin C. Bailey, a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home on Edson street yesterday morning, aged 74 years. The cause of death was heart trouble.
Mr. Bailey was born in Hartford, where he lived until he was 18 years old. He then came to Rutland. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Bailey enlisted here June 20, 1861, in company B, 2d Vermont Volunteers, commanded by Col. C.H. Joyce of this city. Within four weeks of the time the regiment left here it took part in the first battle of Bull Run. Mr. Bailey also saw service in many engagements in the Virginia campaign.
After his first enlistment, Mr. Bailey re-enlisted and served until mustered out in July, 1865. He was married in 1865 to Miss Adeline Brown of this city. Mrs. Bailey died seven years ago. Mr. Bailey was married again last March to Miss Marion McClain, who survives him.
He also leaves five children, Mrs. Lewis Staves, Mrs. James Woodbury, Mrs. Jesse Hinckley, Mrs. Joseph Pecor and William C. Bailey, all of Rutland. Three brothers, Volney J. and Lincius, both of Montpelier, and Lucian of Pittsford, and one sister, Mrs. Fred Schofield of Chittenden, also survive him.
The funeral will be held at the Advent Christian church on West street tomorrow afternoon. Burial will be in the North Main street cemetery.
