COLDWATER-- Edith Ellen Black, 81, died May 3, 2000 at her home in Coldwater. She was born July 31, 1918, at Greensburg, the daughter of John Curtis and Grace Marie Smith Beatty. A Coldwater resident since 1938, moving from Greensburg, she was a retired restaurant manager and worked at the Coldwater Laundry and the Comanche County Hospital for many years. She belonged to First Christian Church, Coldwater, where she was a Sunday School teacher, the First Christian Church Quilters Circle and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Coldwater. On May 27, 1937 she married Freman Smith at Greensburg. He died Jan. 26, 1953. On Aug. 9, 1954, she married John Delbert Black at Clayton, N.M.. He died Jan. 17, 1993. Survivors include; Three sons, John "J.L." Smith, Odessa, Texas, Frank "Steve" Smith, Coldwater, and Roy Delbert Black, Emporia; a daughter, Carolyn Smith, Wichita; two brothers, Henry Curtis Beatty, Houston, and Gene W. Beatty, Coldwater; four sisters Grace Marie Copeland, Mullinville, Iris Dorreen Cole, Wichita, Elizabeth Ann Hollister, Mount Vernon, Mo., and Francis Geraldine Payner, Greenforest, Ark.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Ann Smith, three brothers, Gerald Reno, James Ellis and Warren Durwood Beatty; and two sisters Nettle Evan Green, and Naomi Ruth Keith. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, with pastor Chet Mendenhall presiding. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home, Coldwater. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater. Memorials may be sent to Southwind Hospice or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the funeral home. Hutchinson News May 6, 2000
