Author. She was primarily a poet, most of whose acclaim was gained in her later years. Raised in Kentucky, she showed early gifts as a pianist, composer, and singer, and met her future husband, Leslie George Katz (deceased 1997), while studying music at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. After marriage in the early 1940s (she was Jane M. Katz in private-life), she moved to New York, where Mr. Katz became a publisher. Miss Mayhall's first novel, "Cousin To Human", was released by Harcourt, Brace in 1960. Over the years, her poetry was to appear frequently in "The New Yorker", "The New York Times", and elsewhere. She also published "Ready for the Ha Ha & Other Stories" in 1960, and the two-volume poetry anthology "Givers and Takers" in 1968 and 1973. Her best-known work was to be the 2005 "Sleeping Late on Judgment Day", a collection of poems largely coming from grief at the loss of her husband.
