Mrs. Mary Reitz Barr Died Sunday in Home of Daughter At Age of 87 Years.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Reitz Barr, 87, who died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Brehm, Sr., in Brookville, Sunday, will be held at the Coolspring Presbyterian Church Wednesday afternoon beginning at 2:30 o`clock with Dr. F. Benton Shoemaker, of the Brookville Church, officiating.
Mrs. Barr, one of Brookville`s oldest residents, had been ill for several weeks and on Saturday suffered a stroke. She was born in Beaver Township, near Pansy, on September 29, 1851, a daughter of Godfrey and Catherine (Thomas) Reitz. She was educated in the common school. Possessing an unusally brilliant and active intellect, she was exceptionally well informed on a wide number of subjects. She was united in marriage to John I. Barr, well known Oliver Township lumberman, farmer and Civil War veteran, on October 26, 1871, and the couple resided in Coolspring until Mr. Barr`s death in 1909.
Seven children were born to them, five of whom survive: Mrs. Gertrude Geer, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Florence Shaffer, Coolspring; Mrs. Cathryn Gould, Colver; Homer H. Barr, Coolspring, and Mrs. Blanche Brehm, Brookville. Eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren also survive.
In 1917 Mrs. Barr moved to Brookville and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Brehm.
She was a member of the Coolspring Presbyterian Church. The body will be taken to the Coolspring Church an hour before the funeral service. Interment will be in the Union Cemetery. Grandsons of the deceased will be pall bearers.
Mary's death certificate states she was buried September 29, 1939, in Coolspring, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.
