Russian nobility. She was first a lover, then a morganatic wife of the Russian Emperor Alexander II. She was born into a noble though impoverished Russian family of Dolgorukovs. The Emperor assisted the family after the father's death, helping the four sons to enter the military schools and two daughters – into Smolny Institute for the noble girls. When Alexander met Ekaterina next time in 1866, their romance began. His wife, the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, was ill and the affair was disapproved by the family. However it did not stop the relationship which resulted in the birth of five children, two of whom died at birth. While the Empress was still alive, Alexander moved his lover into the Winter Palace. Following his wife's death, even before the mourning period was over, in 1866 the Emperor and Ekaterina were married. She was created the Serene Highness and Princess Yurievskaya. After the death of the Emperor, following one of many assassinations, in March 1881, together with her children she moved to Nice, where she lived until her death. She published a book of memoires under the pseudonym Victor Laferte. (bio by: julia&keld)
