| Birth: | Dec., 1952, USA | | Death: | Mar. 12, 2009 Chicago Cook County Illinois, USA |  Church musician and music educator, Mary Casey Bey Diawara, of 140 Pointer Ridge Trail, Fayetteville, Georgia, died on Thursday, March 12, 2009. She was 56 years old. A music educator for both Fulton County and Atlanta Public School districts, Mary earned undergraduate and advanced degrees from Howard University where she wrote a thesis on the musical contributions of Reverend James Cleveland, She traveled widely, throughout Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, bringing an unusual understanding of music and the interconnectness of human communities globally. In the late 1990's after attending the Cape Fest World Music Festival in South Africa herself, Mary took a group of middle school students to participate in an international music festival in Ghana. In 1999, she organized a four-week summer program for thirteen teachers from Atlanta, Fulton and DeKalb Boards of Education and returned to Ghana to promote cultural and educational exchange between Ghanaian and African American teachers and students. With her deep commitment to education and service, Mary organized two mission trips to Haiti, received a Fulbright to take public school educators to Japan, and introduced dozens of people to West Africa, Salvador da Bahia and the rain forests in Brazil. A founding partner of Truly Living Well Natural Urban farms, Mary was also very active in the Atlanta health community, working most recently with a global movement for health, nutrition and the environment. Winner of the Quintessential American Legacy Woman contest in 2005, Mary was featured on the cover of American Legacy magazine in the same year and has indeed left behind a defining legacy as educator, musician and global citizen. Mary Casey Bey Diawara leaves behind three siblings and her parents, William and Alice Jean Dise of Chicago; her husband, Bacounda Diawara of Fayetteville, Georgia; her son Dennis Casey of Douglasville, Georgia; and her daughter, Jeannie Casey of Riverdale, Georgia.
