He made his major-league debut on July 20, 1877 with the Boston Red Caps. He later played for the Cincinnati Reds, 1878 to 1880; the Detroit Wolverines, 1881; and the Cincinnati Red Stockings, 1882 to 1888. He was the brother of major-league catcher/third-baseman Deacon White. Will White pitched with his right hand, but was a switch hitter. He was the first major-league player to wear eyeglasses on the field. He holds the major-league records, all set in 1879, for most complete games in a single season, 75; most games started in a single season by a pitcher, 75 (tied with Pud Galvin); and most innings pitched in a season, 680.
