He is best known for his portrayal of 'Kris Kringle' in the 1947 holiday classic "Miracle on 34th Street," for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. Mr. Gwenn was born Edmund Kellaway in Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom, on September 26, 1875. He was the cousin of actor Cecil Kellaway, the brother of actor Arthur Chesney, and the brother-in-law of actress Estelle Winwood (by virtue of her first and very short-lived marriage to Edmund's brother Arthur Chesney). Edmund Gwenn died of pneumonia and complications of a stroke in Woodland Hills, California, USA, on September 6, 1959. (bio by: Crystal J. Geiszler)
