BROTHER OF STATE AUDITOR... J.OMHOLT DIES IN FIRE
Jerald Omholt, 56, Fort Shaw, brother of State Auditor E.V."Sonny" Omholt, died in a trailer house fire three miles west of Fort Shaw on Highway 200 Sunday morning.
Mrs. Gilfor Fjeld, who lives directly across the highway from where Omholt's trailer was located, first noticed the fire when she got up Sunday morning. She called the Fort Shaw fire department.
At the same time, an unidentified motorist driving a pickup with a camper on it, stopped at the scene and pulled Omholt, who had collapsed in the trailer doorway, away from the burning trailer.
The Fort Shaw fire department arrived 10 minutes later and found Omholt lying 30 feet from the trailer which was completely engulfed in flames and beginning to cave in. Fire Chief Paul Caldwell said the unidentified motorists had already left the scene.
Caldwell said Omholt had evidently "opened the door of the trailer and started to go out, when he was overcome by smoke and collapsed."
Cascade County Coroner, Dr. C.E. Magner reported to the sheriffs office that Omholt's death appeared to be caused by smoke inhalation.
Cause of the fire has not been determined, according to Caldwell. He said the trailer "was a wooden structure about 40 feet long." The Simms Fire Department was also called to the blaze, arriving approximately five minutes after the Fort Shaw department.
Omholt was born Feb. 7, 1912 in Great Falls. He moved to Fort Shaw in 1932 where he lived until serving in World War II. After the war he returned to Fort Shaw and moved into the trailer house west of town. He worked as a mechanic and plumber in the Simms area for several years.
He is survived by his brothers Arnold, in Alaska: Leonard and Edward, Great Falls, and "Sonny" of Helena, and a sister, Myrtle Decker Rudyard. He had been a resident of the Fort Shaw area for the past 37 years. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Croxford's. Burial will be in Highland Cemetary.
