Enlisted 6 May 1862 as Private, Confederate States Army, 29th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company H "Thomas County Volunteers", wounded in right arm necessitating amputation below elbow at Jonseboro, GA 31 August 1864, discharged, disability, 1864.
Gipson donated the original parcel of land for the Murphy Cemetery.
