James was called "Willie". He was the son of William M. and Elizabeth Redman. He is found in the 1860 Fannin Co. Ga census with William M. Freeman and Elizabeth, a 2 year old female named Polly, and he is listed as a 6 mo. old baby named William James. Willie's father and the other males listed on this census page are all listed as mining hands in the town of Pierceville, which was a copper mining town.
They are next found in the 1870 Butler Co. Missouri census in Black River Township. William is listed as a farmer along with Elizabeth, James W. "Willie" 11 GA, Lurana L. 6 OH., Elizabeth I., 4 IL, and David H. 1 IL.
By 1880 both of his parents have apparently died, possibly in Missouri or Arkansas. The youngest child in this census is Robert E., aged 7, so we know that Willie and Elizabeth were alive in 1873. We find the children in Lawrence Co. Arkansas in Marion Township in 1880. Willie is listed as a 20 year old servant in the household of Samuel Combs and his wife Martha S. Also listed in Samuel's household is his sister, Elizabeth I. 14, Juliet M., 9 Missouri, and Robert E., 7 Missouri. His sister, Leona is listed as the wife of head of household James E. Combs, the brother of Samuel. In this household of James and Leona Freeman Combs there is also their younger brother, David Henry, listed as their servant, and farm laborer.
These Freeman siblings and Combs siblings married each other.
1. Willie Freeman married Mary Ann Combs, sister to Samuel and James E.
2. Lurana Leona Freeman married James Ervin Combs
3. Elizabeth Inez Freeman married Samuel Combs
Willie married Mary Combs 26 August 1880 in Lawrence Co. Ar., and they had the following children:
1. Sallie S. Freeman b 1884
2. Rosa Lee Freeman b 1888
3. Lurana Freeman b 1891
4. Leona Freeman b 1891 (twins)
5. John David Freeman b 1892
6. Elnora Juanita Freeman b 1897
7. Edna Mae Freeman b 1898
We believe that Mary died sometime between the Cherokee Co. Oklahoma 1900 census and 1905. In 1905 he married Annie LaBass Huggins, a widow with 6 children. They had a son named Clarence. They can be found in the 1910 Potter Co. Tx and the 1920 Quay Co N.M. census.
After Annie's death, he migrated to California where he died in Merced.
