Nada was the sixth of eight children born on the afternoon of Saturday, May 8, 1920 and weighing 6 lbs to Earl Everett and Ida May (Brown) Rickard by Dr. Willyard at home in Center Township on the outskirts of Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. Nada was born feet first and with the umbilical cord around her neck, a difficult birth, to say the least, for a healthy baby born in the early 20th Century at home. When her mother went into labor, she told the older kids to go and play with the neighbors, which they did, and upon their return her eldest brother Jim recalls "we had a new baby sister." Nada Opal's name was provided by suggestion of her maternal Aunt Minnie (Brown) Lanterman, her mother's sister.
She moved west with her family to Oregon when she was one year old in 1921. She was primarily raised in the North Howell-Silverton area and attained 8 years of education concluding at Parish Middle School in Salem. Nada enjoyed camping, going to casinos, playing games with her family and friends and gardening.
She was survived by her husband, Herbert L. Lewallen of 34 years; daughters, Rosalie M. (Doug) Hall of Woodburn, Barbara J. (Bill) Durig of Salem, Debra A. (Tony) Jucutan of Salem and sons, Robert E. Fleming of Salem, Gary E. (Kay) Fleming of Salem; Stepdaughter Debbie Woods of Lubbock, Texas and stepson Glen Lewallen of Elgin: 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Nada was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. Graveside services were held at 1 p.m., Friday, March 13, 2009 at City View Cemetery, Salem. Arrangements by Virgil T. Goldern Funeral Services.
