He was born in Seravezza, province of Lucca, Toscana. He started off handsomely as a romantic juvenile actor but after working with the powerful likes of directors Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica in the 1960s, turned into one of Italy's strongest characters actors of grim, harrowing drama. He met French actress Annie Girardot on the set of the 1960 movie "Rocco e i suoi fratelli" and married her in 1962. During his career between 1952 and 1981, he appeared in over 60 films. His most notable film credits include: "Le Ragazze di Piazza di Spagna" (1952), "Poveri ma belli" (1956), I soliti ignoti" (1958), "Audace colpo dei soliti ignoti" (1959), "Un giorno da leoni" (1961), "Cadaveri eccellenti" (1976), and his last work, "La tragedia di un uomo ridicolo" (1981).
