Services for James M. "Chip" Smith, 50, and Ellen S. Smith, 46, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Motley County High School Gymnasium with the Rev. Monte Wike, pastor of First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Rickey Lawrence, pastor of Full Gospel Church of Roaring Springs, officiating.

Burial will be in East Mound Cemetery under direction of Seigler Funeral Home.

They died Thursday, April 30, 1998, in a traffic accident near Lubbock.

James was born Nov. 17, 1947, in Odessa. He moved to Matador in 1964. He graduated from Motley County High School in 1966 and from North Texas State University in 1975. He married Ellen Louise Short on Jan. 4, 1973, in Benjamin. He was a salesman for Lawson Products. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, and he was a lay minister. He was a member of the Promise Keepers of Matador and the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite. He was a past master of the Matador lodge 824 and post commander of Plainview Commandery 53. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and he received a Purple Heart.

Ellen was born Nov. 20, 1951, in Dallas. She graduated from Lake Highland High School in Dallas, and she received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Texas Women's University. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and she was active in the outreach ministries of the Methodist church. She worked in the obstetrical unit of Methodist Hospital in Lubbock.

Their mutual survivors include two sons, Jeremy L. of Clarendon and Scott J. of Matador; and a daughter, Rachael L. of Matador.

James's other survivors include his parents, Joe and Billie Dean Smith of Matador; a brother, Pat of Matador; and a sister, Seven Alexander of Matador.

Ellen's other survivors include her parents, Bobby L. and Mary Ellen Short of Dallas; a sister, Linda Hodges of Dallas; and three brothers, Stephen Short of Dallas, Mark Short of Austin and Philip Short of Denver, Colo.
