His name means "Horus who succours", and he ruled for about 57 years during the 1st Dynasty, from approximately 3100 BC. The historian Manetho described him as a scholar who wrote a book of anatomy that was still in use in Greek times, 2000 years later. He fought military campaigns in Nubia, Libya and Sinai, making him the first Pharaoh to fight a war outside of Egypt's borders. On his death he was buried in a large tomb at Abydos, and was accompanied by three hundred servants who were the victims of human sacrifice. (bio by: js)
