He earned a master's degree in engineering from Cal-Berkley and taught irrigation and hydraulics classes at the Utah State Agricultural College. His accomplishments in this area of expertise led to him being appointed the State Water Conservator in 1934. A devoted Republican, Clyde won the 1956 state general election and took office as Utah's 10th Governor on January 7, 1957. He was elected to a second term in 1960. Notable accomplishments during Clyde's tenure were the groundbreaking of a new interstate highway and the construction the University of Utah's Medical School. He was a defender of minority rights. Clyde chose not to run for a third term, and left office in January 4, 1965. In 1971 he suffered a stroke from which he never recovered.
