Sgt Major Johnson was one of the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He served for 17 years and retired to Jacksonville, NC in 1959. He was a Montford Point Marine and one of the first black drill instructors. He personally led 25 combat patrols in WWII. The old Montford Point facility was renamed to Camp Gilbert H. Johnson in 1974.
