Zoologist and Illustrator. He began working at the British Museum, London, in 1867, specialising in the study of shellfish. He was published "A Guide to the Shell and Starfish Galleries" (1901), and made important studies of the mollusc specimens brought back by the Terra Nova expedition of 1910.
