Elbert Jones Goats was the son of Benjamin Franklin Goats and Rebecca Elizabeth Smith. He married Mary Jane "Molly" Arnold on July 16, 1884 in Ballinger, Runnels, Texas. They were both small people. Elbert stood about 5-feet 5-inches tall and weighed about 125 pounds. All of their children were born in the same house. Their old log kitchen was the first Post Office in Runnels County. They had fifteen children:
