The son of John A. & Elizabeth (Morrett) Goodyear, in 1860, he was a laborer living in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 2" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle February 28, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 8 as a private with the second organization of Co. F, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

After the war, he married Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" Morret and fathered Emily (b. 10/25/70), Nellie May "Ellie" (b. 07/01/72), Minnie C. (b. 10/31/75), Daisy (b. 10/17/77), and Cousma C. (b. 10/01/78).
