"Old Paint"

On the Saturday before Decoration, some years back, I was preparing the graves (cleaning, raking, putting out fresh flowers, etc.). A lady, who had grew up with my Dad by the name of Mary Ellen Hamm Baker had been talking to me, when suddenly she stopped and said "Kathy has anyone ever told you about your Granddad and that old Pinto pony of his?" This took me a little by surprise, and I finally stammered "No, well I mean I knew that he used to have one, but no one has ever really went into detail..." "Well child, let me tell you." she said. "Your Grandad had three annoying habits, 1. He liked his "Firewater, as he called it. 2. When he got on the firewater, he started that Indian "Jibber Jabber", and 3., oh yes, number 3, let me give you an example of number 3.....
One afternoon, my mother, my sisters and I were out on the front porch. I remember I was churning butter, when I heard my mother holler at my dad "Hamm, you better get out here, Lon Franklin is comin' up the road and he's been drinkin' cause he's singin' them Injun songs!" Mary Ellen said her father came out of the house in a run. "Dad was standing at the top of the front porch steps with his hands on his hips when your Granddad came riding up. My dad looked at him sternly and said " Alright Lon, just turn that Paint around and go on home to Frankie now" she continued " Your Granddad just grinned and started chantin' that Indian stuff...Dad then even more stern said "Lon you're not going to do this, I said just GO on home Now!" Then old Lon took the reins tighter and said to my Dad. " You know Hamm, I would like nothing better, but Old Paint here, well he's got other idees" and with that she said suddenly she heard " Gaddup Paint!!! Away that horse went, right up the porch steps, right through the front door, right through the house and that horse practically flew out the back door. You could hear your Granddad laughing for a quarter of a mile." " Kathy, he did that more than once, not only to us, but to everyone in the county with a shotgun style house...That Lon Franklin was somethin' else"
