She was born in Farmville, NC on June 8, 1919. She was the 5th child of 15 and was the daughter of the late William Cleveland Collie and Estelle Grimmer Collie. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Rowland Vine Edwards; son, John Rowland Edwards; three brothers, Warren Collie, William Collie, Jr., Louis Collie; five sisters, Helen Collie, Linda Allen, Ruth Otts, Louise Sparkman, and Roxie Laybourne; and one great-grandchild, Haley Chadwick Diggs.
Surviving are her daughter, Bland Edwards Chadwick, and husband Robert of Wilmington, NC; two grandchildren, Teresa Chadwick Diggs of Lewisville, NC, and Tana Edwards Wilkey and husband, Sydney of Shelby, NC; three great-grandchildren, Charles Alexander Diggs, Hannah Elise Diggs, and Blake Wilkey; three sisters, Rose Cochran of Hemet, CA; Dorothy Buffin and husband, Elmore of Cape Coral, FL; and Maxine Hines and husband, Bob of Wilmington, NC; and three brothers, Alton Collie and wife, Naomi of Aiken, SC; Vance Collie and wife, Angela of Jacksonville, FL, and Dr. Max Collie and wife, Cindy of Greenville, NC; and a sister-in-law, Jean Collie, of Wrightsville Beach, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Special extended family are Peggy, Ben, and Alan Croom.
Mrs. Edwards, known to most as "Miss Janie", was a very active member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church for more than 66 years. She was a faithful member of the choir and sang in the Living Cross choir for 23 years, spending many hours listening to and memorizing her music. She taught Sunday School in the children's department conveying to the children the message of God's love for them and leaving them with many lasting memories of the "taffy pulls" at her home. These are just some of the many fond memories the children (now adults) will always remember.
For the past 18 years, Miss Janie worked in the Wrightsboro Baptist Church Children's after school Ministry Program. Her love for children was evident through this ministry as she helped each child with their homework, played with them on the playground, went on field trips and shared many loving hugs with the children. She also enjoyed being an active member of the Cape Fear Jewels Red Hat Society along with her daughter and many special friends. No matter where she was or what she was doing, she was truly an example of God's love and demonstrated daily her trust in him.
Miss Janie worked for Deutsch Relays, Inc. for 17 years until it's closing. She enjoyed her love for the outdoors through her gardening and bird watching. All who knew Miss Janie could tell she gave her ALL to each of these very important aspects of her life.
Miss Janie and her family would like to thank the staff of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and especially to her "angels": Gina, Carol, Nancy, and Sharon.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, September 1, 2012 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel lead by the Rev. Dondi Pace, Peggy Croom, and Rev. Mike Lewis. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
