Alberta was the daughter of Sam and Josephine Henry. She was born at Dawson City. Her father was a pioneer of the Yukon. She grew up in Dawson City and appears in numerous photographs in family photo albums dating from the 1910s. Later she went to school in New Westminster British Columbia, and was here when her parents perished in the 1918 Princess Sophia sinking.
She moved down to Seattle shortly after this. She lived with her sister Hazel Selak's family for a time. Alberta met and married George Shrum.
