Colonial American Statesman. He arrived in Philadelphia in 1699 as William Penn's secretary. He rose through a succession of political offices, including member of the provincial council, and was elected Mayor of Philadelphia, 1722 to 1723. He gained great wealth in land investment and fur trading. He tutored botanist John Bartram and was a mentor of Benjamin Franklin. He wrote and published scientific papers on botany and optics and accumulated a library of over 3,000 volumes. He served as Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, 1731 to 1739, and as acting Governor of Pennsylvania, 1736 to 1738. He was a founder and trustee of the Academy of Philadelphia (now the University of Pennsylvania). (bio by: Margaret Orthodox)
