Agnes Dorothy Alvord, 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Marquis Care Shasta in Redding, CA.
Agnes was born on September 4, 1917, in Barnesville, MN. .
She attended elementary school and high school in the Fargo, ND area. In 1942, Agnes attended nursing school at St. John's Hospital in Fargo, ND, and became a registered nurse. During her nursing career, she met a young military man named Boyd Alvord who was a patient of hers. When Boyd was transferred to Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, CO, Agnes followed. Agnes and Boyd were married on June 17, 1943, in Denver. Once Boyd had completed his Air Force career, Agnes and Boyd moved to Sacramento, CA, where they started their family. In March 1945, Boyd accepted a position with C.M. Dickers in Redding. This is where Boyd and Agnes chose to settle and raise their family. Agnes was an amazing wife and mother to her four very active children. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking special treats for her family and the many children who were in and out of their home. She enjoyed her weekends at Hat Creek with her family and friends and the several trips to Europe, the Philippines, and Hawaii. She was a great support to her husband, Boyd, as his career took him from Redding to San Diego and then back to retire in Redding. In her later years, she enjoyed visits with her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many of her close friends. Agnes was very active as a volunteer in her children's schools, and a member of St. Joseph Parish Young Ladies Institute. She was a volunteer "Pink Lady" at Mercy Hospital for many years. She had many wonderful lifetime friends who have been very supportive through the years. We thank them for their support. Agnes and Boyd were very giving to the Redding community. They donated funds for the kitchen at Mercy Oaks and made several contributions to the local YMCA. Agnes was most proud of their donation of the bells and stained glass windows at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, which she attended on a regular basis.
Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Boyd Alvord, who passed away on February 3rd of this year. In addition, she was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Agnes is survived by her four children, David (Irene) Alvord, Terry (Kathy) Alvord, and Diane (Bob) Kempley of Redding, and Patricia (Dennis) Erardi of Stockton, and grandchildren Stephanie Alvord of Fresno, Ruth Ann (Will) Gilroy and Sam Alvord of Redding, Michele Alvord of Encinitas, Lori Kempley of Oceanside, Brian (Kim) Kempley of Tallahassee, FL, and Elizabeth Erardi of Stockton, and two great-grandchildren, Aurelia and Carley Gilroy of Redding.
She is survived by one sister, Dolores Duffy of Whidbey Island, WA.
