A funeral for Alma Shinhoster Welch, 60, who died Tuesday evening (March 3, 2009), will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Baptist Church with the Rev. Franklin Mincey presiding and the Rev. Abrahm M. Frazier Sr. bringing words of comfort. The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Hazzard Hill Cemetery.
She was a native of Waycross, the daughter of the late Ozzie and Verdie Shinhoster. She attended the public schools of Waycross and graduated from Center High School in 1966. She received a bachelor degree from Albany State University and a masters degree and a specialist degree from Valdosta State University. She was a retired educator who was chosen as Teacher of the Year for the Waycross district in 1990 and Ware County public school system in 1992. She was a faithful and longtime member of St. Peters Baptist Church.
She was actively involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chi Gamma Omega chapter, where she worked with health issue causes (Relay for Life), afterschool programs, sisterly relations and the fair booths. She held the honor of "Soror of the Year."
Survivors include her husband, Leonard L. Welch Sr.; three sons, Lamar Welch and Steven Welch, both of Atlanta, and Martin Welch, of Waycross; a brother, Jonathan Shinhoster, of Waycross; a grand-child, Azariah Miles, of Waycross;
brother-in-law, Johnny J. Barnes, Jr., of Waycross; an aunt, Gladys Hall, of Waycross; three uncles, Henry (Ruby) Hannans and Nathaniel Hannans, both of Folkston, and Curtis Hannans, of New Haven, Conn.; and other relatives. Arrangements are entrusted to Fluker Funeral Home.
