Wilma Jackson Durham, 80, of the Kingsport Highway, Chuckey, died Tuesday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital .
She was widely known in East Tennessee for her basketball career at Sullivan High School, where she set scoring records unsurpassed in her era.
She went on to play for teams in Kingsport and Baltimore, Md.
Later, she married and adapted to the life of a military wife, following her husband, Frank C. Durham, who preceded her in death, to distant parts of the globe while raising her family. The family's travels took them to Japan, Germany, Okinawa, Texas, Washington and Kentucky, but always back to her home in East Tennessee.
Mrs. Durham retired as manager of the West Pines Elementary School cafeteria in 1990.
She was a lifelong active member of Jearoldstown United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Family and friends remember her as outgoing, passionate, and always fun to be around. They said she enjoyed "fussing"' with her sister, Mavis Pierce, with whom she was very close and who preceded her in death just four days ago.
Her family said she was a loving mother and grandmother and very dedicated to her family.
Survivors include her two sons and daughters-in-law: Mike and Lara Durham of Limestone, and Phil and Lisa Durham of Greeneville; two daughters and sons-in-law: Becky and Sam Blackwell of Kingsport, and Linda and Daniel Anderson of Tallahassee, Fla.; her grandchildren: Carrie Britton, Ryan Britton, David Anderson, Bobby Anderson, James Durham, Samantha Durham, Joseph Durham, Jennifer Welch, Andrew Welch, and Zachary Welch; and a sister and brother-in-law: Marguerite and Bill Noble of Montana.
She was a daughter of the late O.G. and Myrtle Jackson and in addition to her sister was preceded in death by four brothers: Faye Jackson, Rex Jackson, H.D. Jackson, and O.G. Jackson Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Jimmy Bowers will officiate.
