Martin Sloan was born to Isa (Marsh) and William C. Sloan on the family ranch in Gallatin County, Montana. His middle name honors his maternal grandfather, Alonzo Marsh, a veteran of the US Civil War.

I know little about Martin's very early life, but according to my mother (his niece), Martin left home at a very young age to join the US Navy, lying about his age and evidently getting away with it!

Martin's headstone credits him for serving in WWI, but I've never known anything about this service. With my brother's help, however, I now know the inscription on his marker, "MU1" means he was a First Class Petty Officer (rank) with a specialty in Music. I knew he played the piano but had no idea this was his "vocation" in the Navy. What I have seen, however, are numerous photos of him in one of my Grandmother's (Martin's sister) photo albums. The one I best recall shows him in a rickshaw in China, appearing to be a tourist and enjoying himself!

After returning to the US, Martin met and married Teresa (Terry) O'Brien of New York. I don't know how they met, but seems likely it was Martin who traveled to New York and somehow met Terry. The wedding was in New York according to my mother, probably in the late 1920's.

Shortly after the wedding, Martin brought Terry to San Diego where they lived the rest of their lives. Martin opened a photography business in San Diego, first operating out of his home from what my mother has told me and a photo we have of the home/store.

Martin's photography business grew and he moved it from his home to a store in San Diego. Meanwhile, he and Terry bought an "avocado ranch" in Escondido, a rural area in San Diego County. I remember visiting this home on a few occasions in the 1960's. It was lovely and had a large sunken swimming pool.

Martin and Terry had two children: Phyllis, born 1931 and Roy, born 1935. We have several photos of my mother with the two children when they were young and visiting my mother's family in Los Angeles.

Other things I remember about Martin were that he played the piano quite well (we have photos of both an upright and a baby grand in his home) and smoked a pipe.

Martin Sloan was my Great Uncle and I am honored to have known him and for his service in the US Navy.
