He married Frances Barnhart in 1918 in Ellensburg. They had two sons. He was widowed in 1936 and moved to Seattle in 1940. He had a houseboat on Lake Union in 1941. His sister-in-law, Georgia Stickney, recalled that it was very large. He was employed for many years as a mechanic in the Kittitas County shops. He formerly was a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Before his accidental death, he was living at Snohomish with his sister, Eva Newman.
Earl died in an Everett hospital on a Sunday morning from injuries suffered when his automobile collided head-on with another car two miles west of Marysville on the Tulalip Road Saturday. He was alone in his car and was going salmon fishing. Funeral services were held at the Evenson Funeral Home with burial in the IOOF Cemetery. The driver of the other car was convicted on negligent homicide charges in connection with Earl's death and was sentenced to the State Reformatory.
