Presidential First Lady. Mamie Eisenhower presided as First Lady of the United States from 1953 to 1961 the wife of President Dwight David Eisenhower . She was born in Boone, Iowa in a house although moved from its original site to another, has been preserved and was dedicated on June 22, 1980 a repository of many items from her early life. She and Ike had been married for a quarter of a century when they were thrust onto the public stage in 1942 and remained there for the next twenty years. As an army officer's wife enduring countless moves to new duty stations, she was instrumental in establishing a military hospital in Panama. During World War II, she remained in Washington D.C. living in an apartment while engaging in many volunteer endeavors aiding the war effort. She campaigned alongside her husband during his quest for the Presidency. Upon moving into the Whitehouse, she quipped, "finally we have a long term lease on a house." The Eisenhower's entertained lavishly during their presidential stay hosting an unprecedented number of heads of state and world leaders with Mamie exhibiting unbridled diplomacy and official hospitality. Upon completion of Ike's term as president, they retired to a restored home at Gettysburg adjoining the famed civil war battlefield. They spent eight years together in quiet retirement while wintering in Palm Desert, California. Mamie stayed on alone at Gettysburg, after Ike's death. Once a year she made a trip to Abilene to visit her husband's grave. Her days at Gettysburg were quiet and uneventful. Mamie Eisenhower suffered a stroke and was rushed to Walter Reed Hospital, the same facility where Ike had died a decade before. Mamie never left and passed away quietly early in the morning while asleep. She made the final trip to Abilene where she was interred beside her husband and first born son, in the small chapel (The Place of Meditation) located across from the Eisenhower birth home.
