| Birth: | Dec. 29, 1831 New York, USA | | Death: | Mar. 19, 1895 Ridgewood Bergen County New Jersey, USA |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He grew up in what is now Sleepy Hollow, New York, and worked as a theatre critic in New York City before volunteering for the Union Army in 1862. He was appointed to the staff of Brigadier General Thomas Sherman in 1863, and was wounded during Battle at Port Hudson that year. In 1864, he joined the staff of Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, serving as his military secretary and participating in the Appomattox and Wilderness campaigns. He accompanied Grant at the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Badeau retired from the military in 1869 with a rank of Brevet Brigadier General, US Volunteers, but remained a confidant of Grant and accompanied him on his world tour 1877 and 1878. He served as consul to London, England (1870 to 1881) and Havana, Cuba (1882 to 1884). He was also the author of "The Military History of Ulysses S.
